Classica Orchestra Afrobeat is an ensemble made up of 13-14 musicians of mixed classical, baroque, jazz and popular backgrounds. Directed by Marco Zanotti, it creates in its works of composition or arrangement a border territory that mixes the sounds and expressive peculiarities of the instruments of the European cultured tradition such as strings, woods and harpsichord with African percussions, songs and polyrhythms.
The debut album SHRINE ON YOU, FELA GOES CLASSICAL (Sidecar/Brutture Moderne, 2011) is a heartfelt tribute to Fela Kuti, featuring Seun Kuti and Oghene Kologbo from Africa 70s. It has been invited, among other festivals and theaters, at the West Holts Stage at Glastonbury Festival in 2013.
REGARD SUR LE PASSE (2014) is a three-act musical epic suite with a distinctly baroque character, which tells the epic of the last African emperor Samori Touré of the Wassoulou Empire of 19th century. Guests on stage as solo singer and narrator are two exceptional griots respectively: Sekouba Bambino from Guinee and Baba Sissoko from Mali.
POLYPHONIE (2017) is a concept-album dedicated to the rainforest and nature. Created together with Cameroonian singer Njamy Sitson, the repertoire is completely original and freely inspired by the book “Song from the forest” by Louis Sarno.
Fourth album CIRCLES (2023) features Malian singer ROKIA TRAORE on the single “Ka munu munu” and the Mutoids Waste Company in the live performances. It is a futuristic concept-work on circularity and sustainability, made of original compositions plus one traditional Shona ancient song arranged for mbiras and orchestra.

La CLASSICA ORCHESTRA AFROBEAT è un ensemble diretto da Marco Zanotti e composto da 14 musicisti residenti in Italia. Nei suoi lavori di composizione e arrangiamento l’orchestra crea un territorio di confine che mescola le sonorità e le peculiarità espressive degli strumenti della tradizione colta europea, come archi, legni e clavicembalo, con differenti musiche e storie provenienti dall’Africa, sia tradizionali che moderne.
Il disco d’esordio SHRINE ON YOU, FELA GOES CLASSICAL risale al 2011 ed è un omaggio a Fela Kuti, il più grande genio musicale nonchè ribelle politico africano della storia recente. All’album partecipa il figlio ed erede Seun Kuti. Tra i festival e i teatri che ospitano (tuttora) questo repertorio c’è anche quello di Glastonbury in Inghilterra (nel 2013, prima band italiana di sempre).
REGARD SUR LE PASSE (2014) è una suite musicale in tre movimenti che narra l’epica dell’ultimo imperatore d’Africa, Samori Touré. Ospiti in scena in veste di cantante solista e narratore sono due griot di fama internazionale, rispettivamente Sekouba Bambino della Guinea e Baba Sissoko del Mali.Il terzo capitolo,
POLYPHONIE (2017) è un concept-album di brani originali dedicato alla foresta vergine e alla natura ed ispirato dal libro di Louis Sarno “Song from the forest”. Uno spettacolo concepito e realizzato insieme al cantante camerunense Njamy Sitson.
Nel quarto album intitolato CIRCLES (2023) l’ensemble muove verso il concetto di circolarità con una nuova produzione originale che vede come ospite speciale ROKIA TRAORE nel brano “Ka munu munu” e il collettivo Mutoid Waste Company nella messa in scena dal vivo. Una rappresentazione di un futuro prossimo in cui l’umanità volge lo sguardo finalmente in alto, verso una vita più dignitosa e sostenibile.
